Plone is a true open source project. It is backed by hundreds of developers, organisers, designers, trainers, and advocates from around the world — working together for more than two decades.

The Plone ecosystem thrives on the incredible dedication of our worldwide community. The Community Recognition Program was established to publicly recognize the invaluable work that individuals and organizations do for the benefit of the Plone Community. A core principle of this program is that the volunteering of time and resources is just as critical to our long-term success as financial support. By valuing community, and code contributions, we proudly highlight Plone's identity as a true open-source project backed by a diverse, global network of supporters rather than a single company.

How the Community Recognition Program works

There are three main ways to contribute to Plone:

  1. Financially, as a Plone Foundation sponsor
  2. To the codebase, by contributing code to Plone
  3. To the community, by participating in the Plone open source community

The Community Recognition Program reflects the last two — code and community contributions. Statistics about these contributions are aggregated transparently at plone-contributor-statistics and retrieved at the end of each year.

Recognition is merit-based. Points are awarded for measurable contributions across two categories:

  • Code — Pull requests merged into Plone repositories, and Plone Improvement Proposals (PLIPs) shipped.
  • Community — Serving as a release manager, leading a community team, or serving on the Foundation Board; organizing strategic sprints; and events such as organizing the annual Plone Conference, hosting trainings, and organizing or giving World Plone Day talks.

Points accumulate into five tiers: Community · Bronze · Silver · Gold · Platinum.

To honor these efforts, we use a structured point system that evaluates a wide array of contributions. Because building and maintaining a strong open-source project is a marathon and not a sprint, this program looks beyond just the recent past. Our system measures sustained dedication, tracking general code and community activities over the past 5 years, and evaluating PLIP (Plone Improvement Proposal) implementations over a 10-year span to properly reflect those major, long-term technical achievements. Based on these accumulated points, contributors are listed across our recognition tiers, ranging from Bronze up to Platinum.

Transparency is fundamental to this initiative. Both the recognition process itself and the tools we use to retrieve and aggregate these statistics are fully transparent and open. We warmly invite everyone to review the calculations and the methodology, both at the bottom of this page and in github. Your feedback is essential to keeping this system fair and representative—whether you want to check your own statistics or propose improvements to the point system, you are encouraged to join the conversation and help us refine how we celebrate our amazing community!

Data below is based on the timeframe 2021 - 2025 for general code and community activities (5 years), and 2016 - 2025 for PLIP (Plone Improvement Proposal) implementations (10 years). See also "Background" below for more detail.

kitconcept is the single largest contributor to Plone core. Their team leads the development of Plone's modern React-based frontend and the official Plone REST API, and organizes the annual strategic Beethoven Sprint. Two of the three Plone release managers, Victor Fernández de Alba and Timo Stollenwerk, work at kitconcept.

PY76 employs Maurits van Rees, one of Plone's most prolific contributors. Maurits is a Plone release manager and leads the Plone Security Team. He has merged more than 1,500 pull requests over the past decade across 178 repositories.

RedTurtle, Italy

RedTurtle is a major contributor to Plone and Volto. Piero Nicolli leads the Plone Volto development team, they host the annual strategic Salamina Sprint, and they organize World Plone Day events in Italy. Their team contributes to both the frontend and infrastructure of Plone.

Looking ahead, the Plone Foundation aims to publish a new report every year, using each cycle to evaluate our approach and integrate new insights coming from the community's proposals.
