Medieval Sermon Studies Society

Date added: December 19, 2025

An international society of academics interested in the study of medieval sermons. The IMSSS promotes and fosters the study of medieval sermons and preaching in Latin and the vernacular languages within their social, literary, religious, intellectual, theological, catechetical, political and historical contexts. The Society also promotes and fosters the study of various artes praedicandi, and theories of preaching derived from them, as well as material used by sermon writers (e.g., Florilegia, commentaries, etc.).

Goals and requirements

A central site on which to publish timely news, events, and documents for the society. The Plone site was created in 2006 and serves as a historical archive of the society's activities.

Visit the site at immsss.net.

Development process

Until 2008, the site had been static HTML managed by a single person and content updates had been languishing. The goal of moving to Plone was to allow multiple editors to contribute content, and to make it possible for non-specialists to create, edit, and manage the site's content. Initially built using Plone 3, the site's theme was created by applying Diazo to a free WordPress theme, then upgraded to Plone 4.1.

Outcomes

Moving the site to Plone has been a great success. Content is updated regularly, and for almost 20 years now the society's membership has been able to rely on the site as their go-to destination for news, event announcements, and documents. The site is being upgraded to Plone 6.1 and Volto.rn, mobile-friendly look.
