Appalachian Women Entrepreneurs, a program of HandMade in America, is a great example of the creative community-based economic development efforts that HandMade has been involved in since the 1990's. Betty Hurst is heading up this program that provides a network of support to women starting businesses in rural areas of western North Carolina. Each entrepreneur will have a page on the site that describes their business and displays three representative photos along with contact information. In addition to website exposure, the women benefit from monthly meetings and educational opportunities that help them overcome the obstacles to entrepreneurship often encountered in rural areas.
