Each support area has a mailing list. To streamline and enhance the lists experience, we use a forum service: so you can search, browse and post here — through the web. If you wish to post, you must register — with the forum service, Nabble. This page introduces you to the registration/subscription routine.

To simply browse and search the forums:

  • there is no requirement to register or subscribe.

To post to any Plone forum, you should:

  • register with Nabble — just once
  • allow the plone.org web site to help you subscribe — once for each forum that you wish to address.

(Nabble content is embedded here at Plone, but accounts for nabble.com and plone.org are properly kept separate. The Nabble registration is a one-off requirement that need never be repeated.)

In the example below we use screen shots from the General Questions forum.

  1. From Plone's navigation menu, to the left, select the support forum that you wish to address.
  2. Alongside the name of the list — in this example, plone-users@lists.sourceforge.net — focus on the invitation to 'view options':
    Nabble mailing list options link
  3. The Mailing List Options page is presented. Focus on the Subscribe to... section — in this example, Subscribe to plone-users@lists.sourceforge.net.
  4. Click the Subscribe button:
    Subscribe button
  5. The e-mail address that you specified for Nabble is used, automatically, for a request to subscribe to a list. (Nabble service takes care of this part for you.)
  6. Check your e-mail Inbox. Before long, you should receive a message similar to this, requesting confirmation:
    Confirmation email
  7. To reaffirm your wish to subscribe: read the message, follow its instructions.
  8. In due course you should receive a second e-mail message, accepting your subscription. After you receive that message, you can return to your web browser view of the Plone support forum.
  9. As the forum here is an excellent interface to all list activity, so we recommend that you Turn off mail delivery. The button for this is on the same page as the Subscribe button that you clicked at step '4':
    Turn off mail delivery button
(and in due course your Inbox will receive a message confirming that delivery has been turned off).
  10. At the head of each forum, and at the head of each topic, you'll see Options, including an option to Subscribe.... Relax! Your voyage of subscription has ended. Here, this type of micro-subscription allows you to receive targeted e-mail — for only the topics that are of real interest to you — whilst mail delivery for all other items is suppressed.

Summary:

— register once, only once with Nabble

— for the support forum that you wish to address, subscribe to the list

— read and respond to your e-mail, confirm your subscription

— after confirming: return to the web, accept the invitation turn off mail delivery.

The steps to participation within a forum may be a surprise to a newcomer, but the end results are very pleasing:

√ e-mail is focused, minimised

√ the communities that span the forums become very willing to help each other!

If you are a newcomer to the steps, and you find yourself puzzled, please do visit the Plone Support Chat Room. Describe yourself as: a newcomer to the forums. Sooner or later, someone in the chat room will offer to guide you.

Delivery times explained:

  • a post to a forum (here through the web) is available immediately to other users of the forum (through the web)
  • a corresponding e-mail — to readers who prefer to Turn on mail delivery — may be subject to moderation
  • if for any reason a message to list is delayed, the forum (through the web) will advise you.
