The Regional Agency for Environmental Protection of Tuscany is active in the field of prevention and environmental protection.
ARPAT has been operating since 1996; through a network of provincial departments, local services and sub-provinces in the region, it ensures the respect and fulfilment of regional guidelines in the prevention and environmental protection.
The Agency uses Plone since 2008 for the intranet and the updating of the website.
The new project uses the faceted navigation and improves accessibility features. The website must reflect the agency work: here all the official communications are published, together with reports on the state of the environment, documentation, and news.
Thanks to its security and authorization system, Plone need the definition of roles and responsibility areas. This enable, to all the Agency services, a full autonomy in Web content insertion, implementation and updating.
The first part of the project saw the migration from an old Plone 2 site, the rewriting of products, to make them compatible with Plone 4, and the creation of import scripts to use the features of the current Plone version. Only after that the organization of contents was made, the contents have been collected into seven macro-sections: Agency, Environmental Issues, Tasks, Documents, News, Data and Maps, and Public Relations.
We have changed the navigation mode, with the introduction of multi-dimensional navigation ("faceted navigation"), "constellations" and "popular words."
Moreover, an open source LDAP system was integrateed to verify users’ credentials, both for the access to reserved areas and for the authorization to insert news items. In order to fulfill requirements, custom content types were implemented using Archetypes, as well as a new workflow with suitable creation roles and permissions.
Finally, the new version of the website has been improved also by a graphical restyling using the new white and green colours, given by the agency with the new logo.
