Motivation
Plone's discussion module is a bit too simple. Leveraging Ploneboard's soon-to-be-much-improved threaded discussion features would be an obvious win for discussions across an entire Plone site.
Assumptions
Mark Fallu suggested this PLIP to me via email.
I believe that Tim Hicks may well have already done some work on this.
Proposal
Hook up Ploneboard to the pluggable discussions interface. I lack the technical understanding specify this much further, but the outcomes should be that:
- If comments are turned on for an object, then Ploneboard's logic powers the discussion thread for that item.
- It might even be possible to aggregate the discussions from content objects in some sort of "dashboard" view, to give site users an "at a glance" view of the objects that are generating active discussions.
+1, also
I would very much like to see this, since the default discussion system in Plone is very weak.
I have tried to replace Plone 2.1's default discussion system with Ploneboard 0.1 (svn) just a couple of days ago, but it didn't work, so I guess this feature is not yet complete in SVN. Or I just didn't do it correctly, since I'm not good at reading python code yet.
Migration Tool?
I'm wondering how much interest there is in a migration tool, to migrate the old discussion format to Ploneboard? It seems once you start using Ploneboard for the discussion tool, which I think there will be a lot of interest in, you might as well confuse end users less by converting all of the older discussions to the Ploneboard format.

Why deffered
Out of interest is it an techinical or time reason this plip has been deffered. I notice a pluggable discussion ploneboard in the collective SVN, but it dosnt seem to be active. I think this would be a killer feature for plone together with a stable forum product.
+1
I agree this would be hugely useful. This alone may drive the wide adoption of Ploneboard.
