Motivation
Virtually every forum/community discussion system out there (from Slashdot on down) implements some version of a "signature" that can be set by the user, and is automatically appended to all posts the user makes.
This feature is intended to:
1) Help users establish a more robust "identity" on the board
2) Increase participation by making users feel that they are able to personalize their experience, however slightly.
While this feature is not important to casual forum users, frequent forum users at LiveModern.com place a high value on it, and we believe it should be easy to implement in a basic way.
Assumptions
Signatures should be very simple -- consisting of rich text (bold, italic, hyperlinks -- very minimalist, no images, no fancy formatting.)
Proposal
- Allow user to set a "signature" field in their user profile.
- If a signature exists, append that signature to each post the user makes. Show the signature in the "post preview" screen.

As Limi said, we should use existing facilities. You could just add the users bio into the viewing template.
Seems pretty reasonable to me
Figured I had to put out something that was easy to shoot down. ;-)
Accepting this with modifications
Renaming to "Show a subset of the personal info".
Where did this end up?
Also, an example for how to add things like 'Member Since:" and "homepage" would be great.

Big no ;)
This is not going to happen.
We already have portraits (avatars if you like) and personal bio - these are more than capable of performing this role. If they want a quote, put it in the bio. :)
Adding another member property to do this doesn't make sense.
