A past events exists in Plone 3.3.4 but
the event is not shown beneath the 'Past' tab of p4a.plonecalendar 2.0a5.

Add a future event.
Add a past event (example: 'Christmas 2009', 01:00—23:00 on 25 December 2009).
Publish both events.
Click the Events tab of Plone.
Change the sub-type to Calendar.
Click 'Past'.
