The existing Plone look is getting a bit long in the tooth — seeing as it essentially is the same as when it was conceived 5 years ago, it's time for an update.

Motivation

There's also several technical reasons to create a new visual look - the existing layout/design CSS has been growing organically, and it shows wrt. how big the CSS files are.

Starting over will make it easier to design a leaner and better design with all the lessons we have learned through maintaining the current CSS through the last 5 years.

Assumptions

We might or might not change the icons. If we do, we will adopt an existing icon set like Tango Project or another SVG-based icon set. We will not make our own. ;)

Proposal

  • Come up with a new visual profile (including a logo refresh) for Plone with proper designers
  • Implement the new design on top of the existing classes and IDs, staying as compatible with the old markup as humanly possible

Progress log

The new design is shipping with the Plone 3 betas as the NuPlone theme. It won't be the default, but we might transition to making it the default theme in 3.5.

Currently, it works well on all standards-compliant browsers, but still needs testing and fixing on IE6. I haven't tested it on IE7 myself, but it should work pretty well there from what I know about IE7.

Participants

Alexander Limi (implementation)
Cornelis Kolbach (design and initial implementation)
