Plone has always provided a rich interface for managing and publishing content. However, like many web applications that provide dynamic content, the performance is slower than for simpler, more static products.

Plone 2.1 re-architects the way that Plone interacts with its underlying object database so that, rather than relying on direct introspection to find objects, it takes advantage of super-fast indexes. This means that many elements in Plone — such as content listings, dynamic navigation, site maps, breadcrumbs — are now up to 10 to 20 times faster.

In addition, Plone is also much more cache-friendly out of the box with the 2.1 release — whether you use Apache, Squid or IIS to front your Plone site.
