This is on the 'great reply to debate', people always feel strongly about what the list should do if they hit 'reply', if that should go by default to the list or to the individual who sent it. An ideal way out is to let a user set their personal preference for the lists they're on. This sounds less than trivially easy from a naive perspective, in that you'd have to set different headers based on different preferences.

I'm loathe to reject this out of hand, because it's a neat idea (though I think for the sort of lists/communities we are encouraging it makes sense to have reply to list as the standard option). However, as you note, this is not entirely trivial. Generally you want to compose one message with one set of headers, and let the mailer handle sending it off. However, because we are only talking about a choice between two options, it wouldn't be too hard to send out two message batches for each incoming message. But having one er-user header option really opens the door to having other per user header options, and from there things could become quite unmanageable. I think this idea has an air of feature bloat to it, and we probably don't want to start adding too many knobs and dials at this stage. But it is certainly something to consider for the future.

I'm definitely fine to let it be a low priority, definitely not super high on my list.

I would disagree that reply-to-list as the standard is good for encouraging collaboration, see: http://producingoss.com/[…]/mailing-lists.html#reply-to for a good discussion of all the issues around both.

I personally dislike reply-to list a lot, which is why I'd really like the option. At the very least I think we should have it be an option for the admin if it isn't already.
