Found while studying the code. Since translation caching is not enabled by default this will not hit anyone.
I1nBaseObject: cache invalidation does not invalidate the cache for all translations, only current and canonical. if the canonical object is removed another object is promoted to canonical status, posisbly one with an invalidated cache

The cache is indeed a bad idea in hindsight.

The cache is removed from current SVN trunk.
