Buildout fails on ZODB install on OS X

An incomplete or outdated installation of XCode can cause ZODB to fail to compile on Mac OS X.
If you get a buildout error like:
error: Setup script exited with error: command '/usr/bin/gcc' failed with exit status 1
when running buildout to install Dexterity, you may be missing XCode, have an incomplete XCode installation, or it may be out of date. Try downloading and installing the most recent version from Apple.
