Introducing Ploud

by Saba Resnick

Ploud is a free software as a service platform for the Plone content management system (Plone SaaS).

Evaluating and deploying a basic Plone site got a lot easier recently thanks to the folks at Enfold Systems. They have developed Ploud, a platform that allows users to create a Plone site in under a minute (or as it is written on the company’s web site, in 10 seconds). Ploud can be used by individuals, consultants and organizations to evaluate or deploy the Plone CMS without having to install any software. In addition to Plone's standard features, Ploud includes popular, trusted, add-ons for enhanced functionality like web forms, image rotation, calendaring, Facebook integration, and a choice of themes.

Ploud is free for basic usage. If later your site requirements grow in complexity or you need expanded support, you can easily migrate to a fee-based hosting platform.

Ploud is deployed using a high-availability VMware vCloud solution on multiple redundant SANs with redundant switch fabric. The facilities feature low-latency IP connections through multiple providers on enterprise Cisco routers and switches. The facility has 24×7 onsite security staffing with surveillance and access control and is SAS 70 Type II certified.

Ploud provides a valuable service to the Plone community by allowing anyone to quickly and easily create a free Plone site. It is currently in Beta status and Enfold Systems is soliciting feedback to help them improve the service. Give it a try!

Its compact city center places many attractions in easy walking distance. Once known as World War II's "A Bridge Too Far," Arnhem's reputation as one of the greenest cities in Europe and famous hospitality to visitors from around the globe makes a stellar location for this year's conference.

One of Four Digits' goals for hosting Plone Conference 2012 is "putting Arnhem on the map for Plone," but the folks hosting this year's conference are far from unknowns in the Plone community. In addition to organizing the very successful and fun Living Statutes Sprints in 2010 and 2011, they've participated Plone conferences and sprints around the globe since 2007. Their members also are well-known as "do-ers" throughout the Plone community and are represented on the Plone Foundation Board of Directors. Four Digits develops open source software and web applications for companies and organisations, ranging from relatively simple websites to complex systems. They have a staff of eight people, none of whom are addressed as "manager" or "supervisor."

"I cannot say how incredibly excited I am and we all are here at Four Digits. We think Arnhem is a great place to host the Ploneconf and are very much looking forward to October," said Sjoerd van Elferen, a member of the Four Digits team.

More information on the conference, including registration, calls for speakers, and conference specifics, will be coming soon from ploneconf.org .

Meet the Plone Editorial Team

The news column on the front page of Plone.org has long been a place where the public and Plone community comes to find out the latest information about Plone.

We're happy to announce that a brand new group of writers and editors located around the world has stepped up to help make that news more up-to-date and global. The new Plone Editorial Team will oversee the writing and approval of news on Plone.org as part of our overall efforts to better market and communicate about our favorite CMS.

The members of the Editorial Team are:

Jules Allen

Jules is a founding member of the Plone Foundation and a Zope fan since the late 90's. He was a formerly a journalist who focused on explaining open source and the then nascent World Wide Web to a non-technical audience. He's been a sysadmin, code monkey, art director, cartoonist, typographer, and can still kern a mean headline. He has held C-level positions with a number of software companies and communications firms where he sneakily introduced open source products unbeknownst to the grown ups.

Mark Corum

Mark works at the University of Virginia, where he is involved in web development, design and instruction. His background includes marketing for some of America's largest companies, dozens of political campaigns, and stints as a journalist, script doctor, research engineer, political consultant, brand manager and graphic designer. He has lead the marketing and communication team of the Plone Foundation since 2008 and was twice a member of the Board of Directors (2009-2010 and 2010-2011).

Jorge Gonçalves

A Portuguese journalist, with also a degree in Computer Science, had for some time a weekly radio program about IT, has helped launch "Portugal Virtual" the very first local internet on-line magazine, back in 1995 (yeah, not Plone yet those days, only pure old HTML... ;-) ). Currently living and working in Brazil, works with Zope and Plone since 2003, mainly to help create intranets and manage documents.

Gustav Franzsen

Upfront Systems
Have been using Zope and Plone since beginning of the millenium. Have always been associated with Upfront Systems in Stellenbosch, South Africa. I present Plone (User and Administrator) training and do some content management. I am a Plone user not a developer ... :)

Jean Jordaan

UNEP/IW:LEARN
Jean has been working on Zope and Plone websites for about ten years, with a few excursions as technical writer. Badly named methods, inconsistent variable names, and poorly written docstrings makes him sad. He likes Sphinx docs, but usually ends up reading the reStructuredText source. He is a serial submitter of patches to READMEs.

Sally Kleinfeldt

Jazkarta - USA
My interests and experience include data and content management, information retrieval, computer aided design, environmental conservation, scientific visualization, and GIS. I have a Ph.D. in biology and love creating Plone applications that make scientists more productive. At Jazkarta I specialize in the education and science sectors and direct our training and support services.

Rose Pruyne

Weblion / PloneEDU - USA
Rose Pruyne has designed, developed, and administered Web sites and Web applications since 1995. She currently is responsible for Penn State’s Dairy and Animal Science Web site and related projects. Rose is part of the WebLion Plone documentation team.

Saba Resnick

Brokerjet - Slovenia
Saba works part time at Brokerjet, an e-brokerage house, in marketing department and part time as a writer for Slovenian entrepreneurship web site. She has a Bachelors Degree in marketing and is now doing Masters at University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Economics.

Jon Stahl

Jon Stahl is current a graduate student in Public Administration at the Evans School of Public Affairs at the University of Washington. Previously, he worked at Groundwire, who have launched over 170 Plone sites, hosted Plone Conference 2006 and made many contributions to Plone. Jon has served three terms on the Plone Foundation board of directors, as secretary in 2007-2008 & 2010-2011 and president in 2008-2009.

Rijk Stofberg

Upfront Systems
Programming since 1995, I eventually found my way to python, zope and plone via Roche Compaan and Jean Jordaan at Upfront Systems. I have worked in small, medium and large corporations in the telecommunication, financial, agricultural, fresh produce, backup/ disaster recovery and content management domains. During the past 15 years I have occupied positions as systems analyst, designer and developer. Projects like Siyavula, Connexions, TARMI and Fullmarks are currently my pride and joy, because I want to be involved in projects and communities that actually make a difference.

If you are interested in getting involved as a member of the communications team, please drop an email to news@plone.org. We're actively looking for new members, particularly in areas of the globe which have not been represented in the past.

Advancing Plone One Ticket At A Time – A message to all Plone Developers and Users

FOCUS

Plone migrations can be a bit naughty and not nice for our users. The focus of this Tune-Up will be product maintenance. If you have a product you created or help maintain that is not Plone 4 compatible, today is the day to commit to making it so. If you do not have a commitment to any one product feel free to choose any open ticket in the tune-up list or in the Trac instance on plone.org.

ABOUT

Plone Tune-Ups are regularly scheduled online events that give developers the chance to select and work on resolving issues. Not everyone wants to be a core developer or maintain a product in Plone, but most people have the ability to squash a few bugs, provide QA or improve documentation. Every time you give time back to the community you make Plone a better solution for everyone. As an open source system, Plone relies on developers of all interests and skill levels to participate so that Plone can continue to be a leader among open source Content Management Systems. Experts will be available in a special IRC chat #plone-tuneup if you need help getting started.

THE PRIZE: THE EVER POPULAR PLONE TUNE-UP T-SHIRT

The Tune-Up prize will be a rare and coveted Plone Tune-Up t-shirt. In the past, these shirts have been awarded for: closing the most tickets, helping new people get started or generally being helpful to others. Up to one shirt may be awarded per Tune-Up at the discretion of the Tune-Up managers.

-> On Tune-Up day, go to #plone-tuneup in IRC and ask for a ticket to work on if you don't know which one to pick. If you're wondering about the sort of tickets people start out with, look for tickets tagged as "newbie" or "greenbelt" .
-> Once you have chosen a ticket, be sure to "accept" it.
Plone Foundation Board Votes to Become Open Source Initiative (OSI) Affiiliate

The Open Source Initiative (OSI) recently invited the Plone Foundation to join its ranks as an OSI Affiliate. Following a discussion online among Foundation members, the Foundation Board voted in their December 1st meeting to become an OSI Affiliate.

All that is required to become an OSI Affiliate is a formal statement by the Board that Plone endorses and support the mission of the Open Source Initiative and wishes to become Affiliated. Following that, the foundation will appoint a delegate to represent Plone to the OSI, as well as possibly participating in OSI working groups.

"Plone operates in a sector with a large number of both Open Source and proprietary products," said Plone Foundation President Matt Hamilton. "With Open Source now becoming the default for many customers, it is more important than ever to protect the definition of the term Open Source against corruption. By working alongside the OSI, The Plone Foundation can help further promote and protect both Open Source in general and Plone as a truly Open Source Content Management System."

The Open Source Initiative (OSI) is a non-profit corporation with global scope formed to educate about and advocate for the benefits of open source and to build bridges among different constituencies in the open source community.

OSI was established at the end of the 90s to advance the idea of open source - pragmatic software freedom based on objective definitions. In the decade that followed, the Open Source Definition became the keystone for the doorway to software freedom and OSI's stewardship of the OSD and its expression in evaluating open source licenses was crucial to establishing open source as the norm for software development and deployment. As the slogan for this year's OSCON said, open source has moved "from disruption to default" - from being a force for change driven by the few to being the benchmark for excellence respected by the many.

You can find out more about OSI by visiting http://www.opensource.org/
