Laptop fundraiser a success!

The Plone community raises money for developer that got his laptop stolen on his way to a Plone development workshop.

Laptop fundraiser a success!

David Convent with his new laptop

The earlier announced fundraiser to get David Convent a new laptop was a success — and he can be seen here with his new computer.

David Convent has also promised to buy all the participants in the fundraiser some proper Belgian beer at the next Plone event. "I'm speechless! Thank you for your generosity, I did not expect this", he said in a comment.

Thanks to all who participated! You rock!

I love the Plone community. :)

It's true I don't find much more to say than "Thank you all! I love the Plone community".

I still hardly can believe how successful it went.

Thank you Alex for the fundraising initiative.

Thank you all pledgers, I don't know you all personally but I'm sure I will some day.

Thank you all the ones who told me they wanted to pledge but could not because the action was closed. Don't worry, I did not need more than what I got.

Also thank you for all the kind supportive words.

Finally, thank you Plone community: Plone makes the world better (tm), at least it does for me.

As Alex said, belgian beer will come to you at the next Plone event that I will attend.
We are willing to organize a sprint in belgium this year with the plone.be user group, so stay tuned for the next 'Trappist Sprint' ;-)

As an aside, here comes another happy ending story related to my stolen laptop.

One week after we got back from the Archipelago Sprint, someone phoned me from Algeria (Africa) on my mobile phone,
to tell me that he bought a second handed powerbook in Alger with a lot of personal stuff on it and ask me if I was stolen my laptop recently.

He is a maths student. He quickly saw that all that what was stored in the computer was mainly pictures and code.
He then realized how important that stuff could be for the former owner of the machine.

Obviously it would not be an option for me to buy him the powerbook in order to get it back.
He proposed me to send me over as much data as possible on DVD by regular mail, and never asked me any money for that.
And he did! After a few weeks without any news from him (I nearly got afraid he turned his mind the way around),
I received some DVDs with nearly all my data on them - at least all pictures and all code.

Some of you asked me if I was planning to go to the police and tell them his name once I got my data back.
I certainly could, but I won't. To me, karma is in good balance for now.

Thanks again to the whole Plone community!!

WOW

Great story! If you *have* to have your laptop stolen, it's nice at least to receive all the data from it on a DVD(s) :-)

really cool
