History of snow sprint and why to sponsor
What is a sprint and why is it important to you? Basically, a sprint is an event in which developers from all around the world gather for several intense days of coding, brainstorming and debugging to make the software that you use and love work reliably and intuitively.
Of course, a sprint is much more than that. For an explanation in layman's terms, read Jon Stahl's (Plone Conf 2006 Conference Organizer extraordinaire) excellent blog post "Sprint Wisdom" where he talks about his first experience at a sprint.
Do you use ArchGenXML, CMFMember, CMFEditions, Teamspace, Calendaring? These products and many more were further developed and refined at the Snow Sprint in 2005.
At the last Snow Sprint in 2006, significant work was done on the multimedia suite of products (ATVideo, ATPhoto, ATAudio) as well as integrating Plone with Tramline, the tool which improves the uploading of large files into Plone.
Last year, there was also a major push to build membrane and remember, the successors to CMFMember for the next generation of membership management functionality in Plone.
If you use ArchGenXML to rapidly create new content types, you have benefited from the Snow Sprint where there was much work done on AGX, and most recently adding Zope 3 Interface support.
If you've had a chance to look at the latest alpha release of Plone 3.0, you'll know that there is some pretty cool Ajax functionality, which makes Plone feel more like a desktop app than a clunky web app. A good portion of the groundwork for this Ajax functionality took place at the last Snow Sprint.
The Snow Sprint has been running for 4 years and whether you have attended any of the sprints or not, you are probably benefiting from the hard work that the developers have put in during the sprint.
The Snow Sprints push Plone development forward and provide an opportunity for busy developers to have a concentrated period in which they can work on a product they are passionate about.
Now is your chance to give back. Please consider sponsoring Snow Sprint 2007, and help us make it possible to continue having these Snow Sprints.
