Real-world use case

For our purposes, we will show how to build a theme from a Photoshop mock-up.

Alexander Limi

In this tutorial, Alexander Limi will show you how to take a default Plone site and put a totally different look on it. (Not updated for Plone 3.0)

Plone.NET is the network of professional Plone companies. It needed a different visual look than out-of-the-box Plone, something that looked a bit more corporate.

Abstract Edge (a design agency with close ties to the Plone community) provided us with a Photoshop mock-up, and we converted it into a Plone skin. This is a very common process, and normally it works best this way — visual designers at design agencies very rarely know enough about the web to implement the design in HTML that Does Not Suck™ — so that part of the job is left to us.

The design we are going to implement is shown below (click for full-screen view):

The starting point for our work is the excellent DIYPloneStyle product, which makes it easy to create a skeleton for your theme product. Big kudos to David Convent for providing this handy piece of software that makes our job so much easier.
