3.5. Reordering Items

The contents tab contains functionality for quick and precise reordering of items in a folder.

Consider the following folder, called "Skippers," for holding information about this type of butterfly.  Often, when we add content items, we don't initially get them in the order we want.  The desired ordering is not always alphabetical, but in this example we can assume so. Below you see the Skipper butterfly subfolders are not in alphabetical order:

To move the top item named "Spread-winged Skippers" to the bottom of the list, one would click within the Order column on the right (containing the "double-colon" symbols) and drag the row to the desired position:

Dragging and dropping is done by holding the mouse button down as you move the item. The item that is being moved turns yellow as it is being moved:

When the mouse button is released, the item stays where it was dropped:

I've noticed, on my site, that simply dragging and dropping the item will not stay where I drop it. After I move the item, I select all the items and then navigate off the page, this will allow the item to be reordered.

Also, I have a lot of items in a folder I want to reorder. However, only 20 fit on one page, if I make a new item and want to move it up, I can only move it so far. How would one move an item from page 2 to page 1?

Sorry

Sorry about the multiple posts. Feel free to delete all, but one :)

Michael,

You've probably figured it out by now :) but in case anyone else is having trouble, to reorder a large number of items in a folder, click the Contents tab for that folder. You'll get a list of 20 items in that folder. At the bottom of the list, click the 'Show all items' link to view all of the items in that folder.

When you make a change, it will default back to the 20-item view, so you'll have to keep clicking the 'Show all items' link to see everything again.

I've noticed, on my site, that dragging and dropping an item will not stay put when I navigate off the page. Instead, I drag and drop, then select all, and navigate off. This does allow the object to stay where I moved it.

Also, having more than 20 items in a container, I can only see up to 20 on a page. How would I move an item from page 2 to page 1?

No answer? Should we conclude that Plone doesn't support more than 20 items in a folder?

+1 to that..

if anyone works out how to change order for a folder with more than 20 items i'd be keen to hear it !

seems like ther should still be the clickable up/down buttons as well as the drag drop to move stuff between pages maybe.

There are workarounds. See here: http://dev.plone.org/plone/ticket/7202

Wax on...wax off...

Like stainsby pointed out, the workaround in 7202 (disabling at.kss and plone.kss in portal_kss via the ZMI for your plone site) works (thanks!). You might get in a situation where for instance the page is at the bottom of page 3 and you want it at the top of page 1. Doing this with an up arrow isn't very fun.

Depending on how many pages away your new page is on, you might want to consider enabling and disabling the two files to use a mix of page moving (ie, move the page via mouse first to get to top of current page, then disable the two kss files, use up arrow to get to next page, re-enabling the two kss files, use the mouse to move to the top of current page, etc.) via two open windows (1 ZMI, 1 plone).

It seems like you should be able to cut and paste the page from page 2 onto page 1 and bump the last file of page 1 down to page 2. But doing this just returns the page back to its original location. Default sort order for navigation presentation purposes would be nice too (custom vs. alphabetical).

address bar solution

The same workaround posts (7202) now show a solution where you put the following in your browser's address bar:

http://www.yoursite.com/you[…]top&id=item-to-be-moved

which will take the item-to-be-moved immediately to the top of the folder.

reordering the content

if you want to move the file A from the page 2 to the page 1.. then first drag and drop file A to the top of the page 2, then click select all (and because of that the reordering arrows will appear) and then simply click "up arrow" and the file A will appear on the bottom of page 1..
hope this will be helpful..tho it is a trick but not really efficient..
