3.6. Previous - Next Links

Up one level
Automatic previous-next links for content items in a folder can be enabled under the Settings tab for a folder.

The Settings tab is found by clicking the Edit tab for the folder. There is a toggle for enabling previous-next links for items contained in the folder:

Once enabled, as content items are added to the folder, previous and next links will automatically appear as needed:

Three pages have been created within the Cloudywings folder, and "Page Two" (which has no text, for this example) has been clicked. At the bottom of "Page Two" are links for "Previous: Page One" and "Next: Page Three."

This is a really useful feature!

how to enable this in Plone 3

I can't get this to work even though I've changed the setting as explained here. Are there permissions to set or properties of content types? Or something else that I'm missing?

Next-Previous links

It works as explained in Plone 3. I think you are looking at the folder contents. Just click on the one of the items in the folder on which you have enabled the next-previous links. Then you will be able to see the links in the bottom.

Still not working

Posted by Terry Atkinson at November 27, 2007 - 07:03
Thanks for the suggestion Farida but that's not the problem. I have next / previous links enabled for folders but just don't get the links at the bottom of documents in these folders. I have the same problem with discussions. I have enabled discussions on certain contents but don't get the links at the foot of the page. I seem to have something wrong somewhere that is preventing links appearing at the bottom of pages. Weird and very annoying!

Is it the browser?

Posted by Farida Rahman at November 27, 2007 - 20:03
I am working on the latest Plone 3.0.3 maintenance release. I just tried it in Firefox(2.0.0.9) and IE (6.0.28) as authenticated user and anonymous. The next-previous links come up. So do the discussion links on the items that have discussion enabled. Closer scrutiny indicates that there is a property "nextPreviousEnabled" that controls this feature. And this has a class association as "kssattr-atfieldname-nextPreviousEnabled". So I am suspecting the javascript behaviour on your browser. Will update if I find out something new.

browser?

Posted by Terry Atkinson at November 28, 2007 - 09:40
No, I don't think it's the browser as I have tried several browsers on various machines. Also, I have no problems in viewing other sites, eg this one (not Plone 3?). Thanks for looking into this for me and if you want to look at one of my pages try here: www.newsite.golfdegranville.com/parcours - all pages in this folder have commenting for anonymous visitors and next / previous enabled - the pages are accessed from the portlet in the top left hand column.

I'm having this problem

I'm also having this problem now. This happened when I started using next/previous on a nested folder. I'm not exactly sure why yet.

Perhaps you have an Apache proxy in front of Plone 3

Posted by Jozsef Jaroli at March 8, 2008 - 13:13
I experienced the same problem, and accidentally figured out that if I view the site without the Apache proxy I can see the Previous/Next elements, while if I see the site thru Apache, no Previous/Next, no Add Comment, and a few actions are also missing. I have yet no clue why and how this can happen, but this might be also one reason for this.

solved

Thanks Jozsef. I contacted my hosting provider with your comment and they were able to sort out the problem. This involved mapping domains in Apache instead of in the VHM. Now, all I need is to figure out how to get next / previous links to show in the right language!
