What is workflow, and why should I care?

This FAQ applies to: Any version.

Workflow is a very powerful way of mimicking business processes - but it is also the way security settings are handled in Plone.

Workflow allows you to delegate security settings to normal users without the possibility of them screwing things up - think of it as "security presets" - a set of sensible permissions that are set up for the users to choose from.

This way, totally non-technical users can manage the security in a portal without danger - and without even knowing that they are actually maintaining sensible security policies.
