Account database
Plone uses a number of different sites and services, most of which use accounts to regulate authorization. In order to maintain some sanity a single LDAP based database a used to store all accounts. Using this setup a large number of users can be handled using a standard protocol which is supported by almost all applications.
Statistics
Lies, damned lies and statistics is the popular saying. However we use statistics on services to determine truth about their performance and usage patterns.
