Summary

Public Organizations are growing more reliant on open source software such as Plone, the leading Content Management System.

This workshop presents the experience of several public organizations who depend on Plone. Participants will learn the essential features and benefits of the open source model for system development. The workshop is the ideal venue to explore models for local collaboration, and make contact with pioneers at the leading edge of the movement. Presentations include case studies in public services, insights into Plone community practices, and evidence of the maturity of this new model of software and service delivery.

Plone/Zope : inside view of the ecosystem sustaining the technology

Criteria for selecting Open Source software go beyond the technology itself. This presentation will investigate the organization supporting Plone: the open source community, its interaction with an informal network of over 500 sme’s, and relationship with users. The maturity an organization can be measured by its ability to address future challenges. CRIS with Plone : The Royal Museum for Central Africa experience

The Royal Museum for Central Africa (RMCA), Brussels hosts one of the World’s largest collections on Central Africa. The Museum is active in developing Web-based applications to enable both the public and the Scientific Community to access these collections. Since 2002, the Museum has been involved in several projects based on the Zope and Plone open source frameworks. Each of these projects is testimony to the versatility and user friendliness of these systems. This talk will present the museum experience in several of its large projects as Metafro, MARS and the Geological Archive project. www.africamuseum.be


Plone at the Flemish Governement

The "Departement Leefmilieu, Natuur en Energie" of the Flemish government (the Vlaamse Gemeenschap) has chosen Plone as its CMS and is currently building a mass-hosting infrastructure. Most of the 72 web sites related to the organization will be migrated to Plone, in order to share central resources and vastly simplify the system administration. The CommunesPlone project

A dozen Belgian communes/gemeenten participate in the CommunesPlone project. In doing so, they aim to gain independence from IT services providers by developing, essentially by themselves and in a cooperative manner, applications and websites for their own use as well as for their citizens’. This talk will describe the reasons behind choosing Plone and give an overview of the ongoing projects in CommunesPlone.  www.communesplone.org


Multilingual Content Management Requirements - Workshop results

On November 1st in Carmarthen, Russ Ferriday ran a Workshop attended by influential officers of 5 Welsh Statutory Authorities, the Welsh
Language Board, and several other public and academic bodies. The goal was to elicit a clear set of requirements for improvements in the area of Content Management, Translation, Translation Memories, and translation cost-accounting. The sub-goal was to introduce organizations unfamiliar with open source practices to this growing field, and encourage local collaboration in system development.

This talk will present the outcome of that meeting and lessons learned. The next steps for the project will also be discussed.

Plone community development practices

Introduction to Plone community practices: development «sprints» and extreme programming. Presenting opportunities for closer collaboration between Plone users and the Plone/Zope open source community; and its positive return in term of transfer of expertise and quality.

This presentation will go trough practical examples presenting the results of the latest Ajax sprint held in Belgium and the experience of coaching the CommunesPlone project in its early stages.
